Coventry City keeper Keiren Westwood has said that he should not have played against Portsmouth in the FA Cup but did so to stop more rumours from spreading.
Westwood who has been the subject of mounting specualation of a bid from Sunderland, told the CT: I have not been well for the last two days so I possibly shouldn’t have played. “Maybe if I hadn’t played because of being ill it might have caused a few stories, but that wouldn’t have been the case.
"I was always looking to play but just hadn’t had any proper food for a couple of days, which wasn’t great preparation to play against a Premier League team.
“I had a cheese sandwich at half three on Friday and then a protein shake at 10 o’clock that night but I didn’t have any pre-match food and it caught up with me so basically I was struggling.
“I had blurred vision at half-time because I’d not eaten enough and had had no sugar so I had to come off.
“I am not going to tell someone I don’t want to play because I do. "I just didn’t want to let the team down and I made the decision to come off because it would have got worse in the second half and I didn’t want to let them down.
“I only managed to see the last five minutes of the second half when Dimi made a great save so I am delighted for him because he came in cold and he should have probably played the whole game really.
“I thought I did OK and I am happy for the lads because we defended really well in the first half.
“We have got them again in the replay and we will look forward to that. "We did the same at Blackburn last year and managed to beat them, so anything can happen now.”
