I Was Protecting Armstrong - Mowbray

Last updated : 04 April 2016 By CNS Staff

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that he was protecting Adam Armstrong by not starting him at Gillingham.

Mowbray left the loanee striker, who had been away on England U19's duty and being involved in all of their three matches, scoring twice, on the bench until just after the hour mark and told Keiran Crowley that he was also protecting Jodi Jones, who came off so Armstrong could come on.

Said the City boss to Keiran Crowley: "Jodi had a dead leg from the last game and it was touch and go whether he'd actually play. He was also being kicked about a bit so I thought it was important we took him off then.

"He was limping a bit and he's an 18-year old boy who I can't expect to keep going for 90 minutes having just come into the club.

"It was the same with Adam Armstrong as well because he'd played a lot of minutes for England so we had to protect him."
