The Coventry City Former Players Associaton have already announced the names of the more than FIFTY Sky Blue stars of the past that will be gracing the Ricoh on Saturday for our Legends Day 2018.
One of their number, as is usually the case at successive Legends Days is popular Sky Blue Legend and goal poacher extraordinaire Ian Wallace who will be part of the Scottish contingent of our former players attending.
Ian will be fully involved along with all the other stars of yesteryear in the itinerary of events of, what we trust will be, a memorable day. However ‘Wally’ has graciously agreed to additionally take on the duties of our match-day ‘special guest’ as he has done several times before! Ian will therefore be putting himself about the Ricoh meeting Sky Blues fans even more than our other guests and will be hoping for a Sky Blues win against top ten rivals Lincoln City on March 3rd.
Ian needs little introduction to Sky Blues’ fans being fondly remembered as a will o’ the wisp inside forward during the late 1970s, chiefly famous for the potent partnership he forged as the more delicate foil to forceful centre forward Mick Ferguson between 1976-80. Ian was signed from Dumbarton and in the four seasons before departing in July 1980 (for one of the first ever £1m transfers) to Nottingham Forest he managed a brilliant strike rate of 59 goals in 140 first team appearances as well as several Under 21 and full caps for Scotland.
After showing almost equally impressive form with the Forest from 1984 he tried his luck in France, Madeira and Australia (as well as Sunderland) before returning to manage Dumbarton from 1977-79.
‘Wally’ has proved to be a pretty regular visitor (and good friend to the Club and Association) in spite of him having to travel down from his home in Scotland. He is a Legends Day regular and also tries his hand at some of CCFPA’s Golf Days too!
In addition to joining his illustrious former colleagues and other guests for a pre-match meal we hope Ian will be touring the supporters lounges to meet as many fans as possible. He will certainly join colleagues in the G-Casino after the game for the traditional ending to Legends Day – the mass singing of the Sky Blue Choir of Jimmy Hill‘s ‘Sky Blue Song’ from the stage of Lady Gs conducted by CCFPA’s Billy Bell.
Those fans who cannot make the game will undoubtedly be able to hear Ian on the airways providing expert live commentary and analysis for the BBC CWR team as the game unfolds. A special thanks and welcome goes to Ian!!
