The Coventry City Former Players Association are pleased to announce that joining us as our ‘special guest’ for Saturday’s Sky Blues home game against Cheltenham Town is ‘Cov Kid’ and former Coventry City forward/ midfielder (and CCFPA member) Gary McSheffrey. ‘Sheffers’ will be hoping to see the Sky Blues Division Two campaign get back on the rails after that thoroughly disappointing 0-2 defeat to lowly Morecambe in the north west last Saturday.
Gary is now able to return to see his home town club as he has just been released from his most recent posting at non league Eastleigh Town (where he played with another former Sky Blue Reda Johnson). He had joined Eastleigh this season after being released by his last Football League club, Doncaster Rovers last May.
‘Sheffers’, who still has family sporting links with his home town will know what is expected of him as he was a CCFPA ‘special’ at one of our home games last season . He is pictured (left) doing a Q&A then with ex Sky Blue defender (and also CCFPA member) Dave Busst. Our former Sky Blue ‘special’ striker made 281 Sky Blues appearances (72 goals) in two spells at CCFC (1998-2007 & 2010-14).
Gary has made a career total not far short of 550 appearances for Football League and Premier League clubs (and became the youngest player ever to play in the premiership with CCFC). Gary had played for Birmingham City, Leeds United (on loan), Chesterfield and Scunthorpe United during his career before Donny. Gary was not offered a new deal for 2017-18 by Rovers whom he joined in 2016 (after a loan) after his spell with Scunthorpe United ended.
Look out for Gary before the game in CCFC’s Family Zone where he will be happy to meet the club’s youngest generation of its supporters (and their families) and no doubt Sky Blue Sam and at least one member of the current Sky Blues squad will also be there. Also pre-match we are sure Gary will be touring the supporters’ lounges almost certainly in the company of club host (and CCFPA member) Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts. After the game, too ‘Sheffers’ will, no doubt be enticed to say more than a few words from the stage of Lady Gs in the G-Casino by CCFPA’s own Billy Bell.
If you really can’t make the game why not listen to Gary on BBC CWR where he will be providing forthright analysis for the local radio station’s live match-day commentary team. Let’s hope the ‘Cov. Kid’ and the Sky Blue Army see a Sky Blues win!
