Coventry City striker Gary McSheffrey has said he believes that they are moving in the right direction and are all behind their manager for the start of the season.
The 28 year old Coventry born striker, who scored his first goal of the pre-season campaign last Saturday in the 1-0 win at Kettering, is revelling in his new position at the tip of the diamond formation that Andy Thorn likes his side to play.
Looking forward to tonight's game at last season's League Two champions Chesterfield, McSheffrey said to the CT:“I think we are pretty much on track."
"We have got a couple of tough games this week starting tonight and then against Norwich on Saturday which will be a big test but they are the sort of games you want to play in and I think if we come through these two games playing well and with confidence then we will be there or there abouts."
“It is a small squad but I think we are OK defensively. Ideally we could probably do with another midfielder and attacker, just for strength in depth, but the situation is how it is and that means that it can’t happen at the minute."
“The lads are comfortable on the ball and playing for the manager so we’re fine with it. We all know we could do with one or two additions but in time I am sure things will fall into place.”
The persistent problem that Coventry City have struggled to find an answer to is scoring goals and finding the striker who will consistently score the elusive 20 goals a season in particular.
The problem has not been helped with previous managers playing strikers out of position, quite often as wingers as McSheffrey has been asked to do on many occasions, but with the Thorn diamond formation, McSheffrey is thriving in a more natural position and is hoping to be able to knock in a sack full of goals this season.
Toward the end of last season, playing at the sharp end of the diamond, McSheffrey scored three goals in five games, but then missed the last five games with a knee ligament injury.
McSheffrey insists he is well over the injury and that he is now fighting fit and raring to go. He said: “I virtually rested all summer."
“Normally I am quite active but I just wanted to give the injury the time I thought it needed and I was a bit concerned when I came back because it still felt a bit rusty but I haven’t missed a training session and every day it has got stronger and stronger and hopefully it is at the back of my mind now and I can look forward.”
“I love playing where I am at the moment. It is always nice to get your first goal and I did that on Saturday, which was nice. We have won again so it gives us a bit of momentum and confidence going into the next game.”
