Coventry City striker Gary McSheffrey has said he would welcome a chance to operate as an out and out striker again and is ready to take Marlon King's place should the striker decide to not to renew his City contract.

McSheffrey is revelling in the style of play under Andy King and he can now play with much more freedom which he believes will lead to more scoring opportunities. He started his Coventry City career as as a striker before being moved either onto the wing or midfield by a succession of managers, but the player sees himself as a striker and that is where he would prefer to play.

McSheffrey was the club's leading goal scorer for three seasons on the trot and it was this form that led to his transfer to Birmingham City where, apart from his first season, he failed to regain his scoring form.

Under Thorn, McSheffrey is now playing at the tip of the midfield diamond formation has given him renewed confidence and has allowed him him more freedom, which in turn has led to him getting more scoring opportunities.

It was playing under this formation that he scored the goal at Burnley which was later voted as the Goal of the Season, "Looking back, it was a cracking goal," said McSheffrey to the CT.

"I used to score goals like that a lot at Coventry and in my first season at Birmingham, so it was a long time coming and was nice to see because it gave me a bit of self belief back that I could still produce a goal like that and a bit of top quality."

When he was asked if he would like to play as a striker again he said: "Yes, without a shadow of a doubt. People might have said that four or five years ago I was maybe a yard or two sharper but I think that just comes with confidence."

"Come the new season I will be coming up 29 and the years have flown by but I have got experience and if you are confident you can be two yards sharper and quicker because you are quicker in your head and on to things quicker."

"I am sure the manager has got his targets if Marlon goes, but if called upon I will happily do that job. We haven't had a conversation about it but I am sure he knows that we have got a couple of big men up top in Lukas Jutkiewicz and Clive Platt, and everyone loves a big man, little man partnership.

"Kingy will be a massive loss of we lose him but I would happily try to fill his boots."
