I have received more correspondence from the Football League following the decision to play the Coventry City V Walsall game on the same day as the England versus Denmark game at Wembley.
The Football League’s latest reply is as follows:
"Up until the last few seasons England played Internationals mainly on Saturday’s in a direct clash with League’s 1 and 2. We invited clubs to move off these dates to the Friday, Sunday or move kick-off times. Some clubs did move to alternate dates and some didn’t depending on how they thought it would affect their gate.
Since UEFA started scheduling International matches on Fridays and Tuesday this has no longer been a problem for the majority of our clubs. However there are a number of games on Tuesday 4th March, which is the usual midweek day for FL clubs to play, however as Coventry play on Sundays, due to their temporary stadium relocation, the Club has chosen to play on the Wednesday of that week in an effort to ensure their players have sufficient recovery period to play against Walsall which is obviously their first priority.
"It is a relatively infrequent occurrence for League clubs to play at the same time as International matches, but this does happen from time to time due to the need to schedule a large amount of games at that level, and as above, this is often shaped by club preference. With League 1 and 2 clubs invariably involved for periods of the season with 46 League games each, Johnstone’s Paint Trophy games, Capital One Cup games and FA Cup matches, occasionally clashes may occur.
However we should gain stress that, as previously stated, Coventry City had the option to play on an alternate date and chose to play on Wednesday."
