Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray was delighted to get his first win at the Ricoh Arena in the 1-0 win against Colchester United.

Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Alan Poole, Mowbray said: “It gets a bit nervy when there’s only one goal in it.

“We had some great chances to give ourselves a bit of breathing space and we didn’t take them. When it’s 1-0 the other team will always gamble, push men on and put the ball into your box to try to get a goal late on and your own team sit a bit too deep.

“But we won 1-0, it’s three points, and we have to be happy with that and move forward.

“It’s still very, very tight down there but if we can win in Tuesday it will give us a little bit of breathing space and the games start running out after that so it’s a massive game for us and one we’re looking forward to.

“Most of the first half was played in their half but it’s evident we’re not flush with goals so we have to keep it right at the back.

“We’ve been 1-0 three times in my tenure here and not taken maximum points – lost two and drawn one – and we wanted to make sure it didn’t happen again but within five minutes the keeper’s having to make two saves. That’s a disappointment for me because we talked at half-time about starting bright.

“There were good spells for us but there’s lots and lots we have to improve on. We have to have more control and I thought young James Maddison was good when he came on, giving us a level of control.

“On the training pitch at Ryton the midfielders get on the ball, move it around and we look a really good team but when we come to the Ricoh they’re not as brave on the ball, It’s a personality trait they have to understand – your Flecks, Wards, Bartons and O’Briens have got to be a bit more like Maddison, a young boy who wants the ball, cuddles it and keeps it, at times perhaps too long. hey’ve got to trust their own ability.”
