Mowbray Happy With The Performance

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray was happy with his team's performance in the 1-1 draw against Northampton Town.

Mowbray told the Coventry Telegraph: “Young players look at results, points accrued but I’ve told them they mustn’t do that. “They don’t have to think about the table until we get a dozen games in.

“A couple of wins on the bounce and you’re in the top six so there’s no need to worry about tables at this stage – we know that from when we were top last season.”

“The group are a bit despondent – they felt as if they’d done enough to win the game – but I’ve told them that doesn’t count if you don’t put the ball in the net and we o obviously haven’t done that enough this season.

“A couple of 0-0s and a 1-1 – that’s not enough points for the effort we’ve put in and we had some great chances to win the game today.

“What I do know is that I see the signs of a pretty decent team growing together and once we get this window shut and get the group together we can start working on how to improve the results.

“We have to discover what type of goals we’re going to score. Last year there were a lot of counter-attacking goals using the speed of Armstrong, Murphy and Kent to create wide open spaces.

“It’s not the same this year so we have to find a way. There were a lot of crosses whizzing into their box today – Marcus Tudgay scored the winner from one of them – so that’s encouraging.

“There was lots of domination with possession, we moved the ball around well and got into some great positions but too often we had a touch too many and didn’t pull the trigger or we shot over the bar.

“We need to be more clinical: I can talk to them, tell them, even show them the clips but you’ve got to work at it and if you get a yard you’ve got to shoot.

“But I don’t want to be too critical because I thought we worked extremely hard and showed a lot of talent today and if we keep playing like that we’ll win football matches.

“I feel quite confident about the team; I think it will get stronger in the next few days and once we can do the work on the grass I think this will be a difficult place for teams to come.

“I don’t think we’re very far away from that."
