Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that the 6-1 defeat to Norwich City in the League Cup Second Round last night was embarrassing.
What can you say about that,” said the manager to the Coventry Telegraph; “naive I think. The result is embarrassing for the team and it’s not nice for the supporters who made the trip.
“It’s a hard lesson for us all, disappointing to lose six goals because that hasn’t been typical of us this season.
“That hasn’t been an area of the pitch where we’ve looked vulnerable; defensively we’ve been pretty sound. We’ve had a couple of clean sheets, we were beaten by a 97th-minute goal at Swindon and I thought we were in control against Bradford until the sending-off and the penalty.
“It’s not in our nature to put up banks of four and play negative football – I’d rather test them and see how far they can go. We came to play and try to express ourselves and ultimately paid the cost. We gave them the first two goals on a plate and you can’t come to Norwich and do that.
“If you’re spreading out to play you can leave yourselves a bit open. We know Jacob Murphy and James Maddison, of course, who can be expansive on the transition and they’ve got other players all over the pitch who can hurt you if you’re too open like we were the last half-hour or so.
“It’s not necessarily the formation, it’s just the class gulf at times, especially when you’ve got as many young players on the pitch as we have. And you’ve got to give Norwich credit because to think they made so many changes and still have the quality they’ve got.”
