Shrewsbury Town are to have a new manager.

Paul Hirst left the Shrews this week after the club were beaten in the League One Play-Off Final at Wembley by Rotherham United, to become the new manager of Ipswich Town replacing Mick McCarthy.

Shrewsbury have opted for John Askey, who has guided Macclesfield Town, a club he spent three decades with,  back into the Football League.

Macclesfield have said in a statement: "Whilst the Football Club is saddened to see him leave for a new opportunity we understand that this is a chance for him to move up the footballing pyramid.

"We wish to place on record our thanks to John for not only the incredible job that he did in leading the Football Club back to the EFL, but for his dedicated service to Macclesfield Town over the last three decades as a player, a coach and a manager."
