A story in The Sun this morning claims that Lee Hughes will sign for Oldham Athletic when he is eligible for parole in August.
The article says that Oldham boss Richard Corney met the striker who is serving six years for killing Coventrian Douglas Graham in a car crash and later his wife Maureen whilst leaving the car driver Albert Frisby paralysed. Hughes initially fled the scene as he was according to the paper "high on booze and drugs."
Oldham Want Lee Hughes
Hughes, who was sacked by West Brom to whom he had returned after a largely unsuccessful spell at Highfield Road, served time in Winston Green Prison before being moved to Featherstone Jail in Wolverhampton.
Oldham's Barry Owen told his club's website: "Oldham Athletic does not condone what happened and we are very sympathetic towards the family of the victim. However, Lee Hughes is now nearing the end of his sentence and he has paid the price for what occurred.
"As far as the club is concerned, Lee deserves a second chance and we consider this a top-class signing. We would ask supporters and the general public not to pass moral judgement.
"Lee Hughes is currently serving his sentence in one of Her Majesty's Prisons and the club will not make any comment which would prejudice his upcoming parole hearing. "We hope that, if his hearing is successful, Lee will be available to play for Oldham near to the start of the season."
