Many of us, who will either be at Coventry Cathedral or in Unversity Square or listening on the radio/internet will be too young to remember much of what Jimmy Hill achieved during his time with Coventry City.
However, Jimmy was always the innovater when he was President of The Football League in later life.
I attended on behalf of the then Football Supporters Association , a meeting with the Football League at their London office back in the 1990's with AFC Bournemouth fan Peter Wicks and the then Chairman Dave.
In walked Jimmy, who stood as we introduced ourselves and which team we supported. I said "Coventry City". A big grin appeared on Jimmy's face and he came and sat in the vacant chair next to me and said "Us Cov have to stick together."
On the agenda, was how the Football League could get to more supporters on a national basis at a time when you only saw the goals from teams in the Football League in your area.and if you did not live in that television area, you did not see the goals.
"How about a national television show showing all the goals from Football League matches?" I said to Jimmy. "That is brilliant," he replied. "I am taking that up."
It took its time but thanks to Jimmy Hill, who had been very busying touting the idea around to the various television networks, the programme which we now know as "The Football League Show", came to life and continues to this day on Channel 5.
