“Coventry City do not like being in this situation, but we feel we have no choice but to ask the professionals to help the club out by accepting this wage deferral," said McGinnity
“Everyone here is doing their best to improve the financial situation at Highfield Road and we are looking to do this in the shortest time, but at this moment, the help of the players could be key in keeping the club solvent. This is one of a number of cost-cutting measures the club has instigated to ensure the continued support of our bankers.”
Sky Blues’ PFA representative Keith O’Neill said: “It is a horrible situation for both parties and I can see it from both sides. But at the end of the day the players have come to the club and signed contracts which the club agreed to and they are legally obliged to honour those contracts.
"I have spoken to Gordon Taylor at the PFA and that’s the stance he has taken. We are currently taking advice from our union and hopefully we can find a lasting solution to suit both parties.
“Of course we have total sympathy for the club which has a great tradition but in the last 18 months it has gone through its worst period in its history. But from the players’ point of view it is not a nice situation to have to go home and tell their families. Not everyone in football is on massive wages.”
