The Coventry City Former Players Association is pleased to announce that our former Sky Blue striker Paul Culpin will be CCFPA’s ‘special guest’ at Tuesday night’ penultimate home game ( a rearranged fixture) against Lincoln City at the Ricoh next Tuesday night (24th April 2018). The original tie, also designated our Legends Day, was ‘iced’ off on March 3rd. Legends Day 2018 will now be celebrated at the Sky Blues final game of the season on May 5th when they take on Morecambe hopefully by then certain of a League Two play-off spot.
Initially an apprentice with Leicester City and also an England semi-professional international, ‘Cully’ signed for CCFC from local non-league side Nuneaton Borough (where he had been a prolific scorer and is in their ‘Hall of Fame’) in summer 1985.
Paul netted twice in twelve first team appearances for the Sky Blues. Though he didn’t play at Wembley (being cover for fellow CCFPA members Keith Houchen and the late Cyrille Regis) one of the highlights of his career was being part of that squad and walking on to the hallowed turf with the Cup Final team to the acclaim of the Sky Blue hordes.
Paul moved on to Northampton Town in 1987 where he was a regular scorer over two seasons. After spells with Peterborough United, Barnet, Hereford United and Christchurch United (New Zealand), Paul returned to his non league roots with Nuneaton and still lives locally’.
As it is another home floodlit game there will be no Family Zone so the first chance Sky Blues supporters will have to meet Paul is when former Sky Blue defender, now club host and our member Brian ‘Harry’ Roberts will be escorting him around the Ricoh’s supporter’s lounges for brief Q&A’s before the game begins. Post match CCFPA’s Billy Bell will be entertaining fans and ‘Cully’ from the stage of Lady Gs underneath the Ricoh as they chew over the performance of the Sky Blues in a must-win game.
As the game unfolds Paul will also be assisting BBC CWR’s commentary team from the Ricoh Press Box in making sense of the match events for any Sky Blues fans who cannot make the game.
‘Cully’ is a frequent Ricoh match-day visitor and regular supporter of all the CCFPA’s major reunions, attending both our Legends Days and Golf Days. We look forward to meeting him again on Tuesday night and hope he watches a win with us all!
