Pete Gets His Fifty Years Service Award

Peter Ashby, received his award for fifty years service to grass roots football at the Coventry Charity Cup Sportsmans Dinner at the Royal Court in Coventry on Thursday evening.

Peter, first started playing for St Pauls' Church, Foleshill in Coventry in the late 1950's then played for other clubs in the area during the mid 1960's.  

Took over as Secretary/Manager of Edgwick United in 1971.  The team was then playing in the Coventry Service of Youth League.  He joined the league Management Committee in 1973.  Became Assistant Coach for the league representative team, eventually becoming Coach.  In the early 1980's became Chairman of the league until its closure in 1989.  

Edgwick United moved into the Coventry & District league in 1975 and Peter was appointed on the Management Committee as a club rep in 1976. After 15 years service he was made a Vice President. 

In 1978, while still playing, he passed the referees exam and continued to referee for a further 20 years. 

In 1983 joined the Major Boyd Carpenter Charity Cup Committee and in 1999 became Chairman, a position still held today.  

In 1995 he became part of the team which amalgamated the Coventry District League and the Coventry & North Warwickshire League to form the Coventry & Warwickshire league in 1996. 

Peter joined the Coventry Charity Cup Committee in the mid 90's and became Vice Chairman 4 years ago. 

During his time with the Coventry Service of Youth league he was the League Representative to the B.C.F.A. 

In 1989 Edgwick United decided to call it a day and Peter moved to Dunlop F.C. as 2nd team  Manager and Club Trainer.  After 2 years he was invited to join Longford Rangers and continued in the same role at Longford for 5 years.

Peter received the award after being nominated by fellow Coventry Charity Cup Committee Member Kev Monks from Mike Penn of the Birmingham County Football Association.
