Police Say Pitch Invasion Was Wrong

West Midlands Police have said that Coventry City supporters were wrong to celebrate the Sky Blues getting to Wembley on the pitch on Tuesday night after the 2-1 win against Wycombe Wanderers.

Chief Insp Gareth Mason, said to the Coventry Telegraph: “I totally understand the jubilation of the supporters in wanting to celebrate winning a place in a cup final at Wembley Stadium.

"However, for the safety of fans, players and officials, it’s not acceptable for people to rush from the stands, push through a line of stewards and police, and encroach onto the pitch..

"The club is responsible for ensuring people’s safety at the event and our officers are there in a support role. Due to the actions of these supporters, the club risks being fined or having another sanction imposed by the FA.

“There was a clear line of police officers and club stewards − they were in place several minutes before the final whistle, there were no surprises, and it was an obvious sign that the club did not want fans to invade the pitch.

“The video footage has been passed to our Professional Standards Department for an assessment; there have been no arrests and no reports of any injuries to fans or police officers."
