Coventry City has taken a striker on trial with a view to adding options to Steven Pressley’s side.
Jake Jervis is a free agent and can sign for Coventry outside the transfer window and under the ‘one out one in’ condition that allows the Sky Blues to bring in new players; Pressley can bring in new faces.
The 22 year old, 6’3” Jervis has recently returned from a spell in Turkey where he played for the Turkish Super League side, Elazigspor, for whom he made three appearances, scoring one goal.
The Wolverhampton born Jervis is a graduate of Birmingham City Academy, but he has failed to secure a permanent place in any side, spending most of his playing career out on loan. While under contract at Birmingham, for whom he made just two appearances, he has been loaned, over a three year period, to Hereford United, Notts County, Hereford (again), Swindon, Preston North End, Carlisle, Tranmere, Portsmouth and finally Elazigspor.
Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner, Coventry manager Steven Presley said: “We are a little bit short on the ground but we’re assessing a number of options.
"We’re going to take a look at Jake Jervis for a few days and assess where he is, so he’ll be joining us for a trial period but the likelihood is that we’ll not be doing anything before the weekend.
“He’s unattached at this moment and spent part of last season in Turkey. He’s 6’2” or 3” and very mobile, so we’ll have a look at him, but the truth is there are a couple of areas I have identified where we need a little bit more strength in depth, but I don’t want to make any signings that aren’t right for the club in the longer term.”
Pressley revealed he had been looking at a wide midfielder as cover for the injured skipper Carl Baker, who looks an injury doubt for Saturday’s game at Stevenage. Pressley said: “The one that I am very interested in is unfortunately injured so we can’t bring him in just now.
“One of the big things with the size of squad we have is we need to be fortunate with injuries. In the last couple of weeks we have been unfortunate, but we are also very much on the lookout to bring in a couple of players.
“I have identified several players but it’s just a question of timing when we can bring them to the club. It’s important we get the right players in and when they become available then, of course, we’ll move on them.”
