Coventry City manager Steven Pressley has said he is looking at attempting to sign three players in the January transfer window and has a hit list of five possible targets.
Pressley wants to add a defender and either two strikers or a striker and wide player.
With strike Callum Wilson out of action for possibly two months as he recovers from a shoulder injury, Pressley want to find replacement striker.
The recent signing of Denzel Slager is seen as a long-term investment and not a short-term replacement for the absent Wilson.
Pressley told the Coventry Telegraph, “Ideally we’d either like to sign two strikers, or one striker and a wide player, so we are trying, we really are. It’s a really aggressive market in January and it makes it very difficult because whenever you inquire about somebody you are one of five looking at the player.”
Pressley admitted he would like to sign both Dan Seabourne from Yeovil and Chris Dagnall from Barnsley, both players had been on loan at Coventry in December but have returned to their parent clubs.
Pressley said, “We’re obviously keen to bring Danny Seaborne back into the building and we’re hopeful we can get an agreement with him and Yeovil. Steve (Waggott) is speaking to the agent this week. He’d obviously still be suspended this weekend so he wouldn’t be able to play against Crawley but we’d love to be able to tie something up by early next week.”
Pressley is keen to act early in the month rather than leave it to the last minute, he said, “I’d like to do something sooner rather than later in the window. I brought in Denzel Slager but he’s one we’re looking to for the future. Ideally I don’t want to bring in too many young and untested players because the group needs a little bit of the Chris Dagnall type, with some form of league experience behind them.
“That’s important but it’s not easy to find just now. I could go out today and sign a young striker from one of the Premier League clubs but it’s not what I think we need at this moment in time. I think we need someone with some form of experience and physicality about them.”
Asked if Dagnall, who has returned to Oakwell following a month on loan, is still on his radar, he said: “He’s someone who’s definitely in our thoughts but, again, the situation with their club is he’s only got five or six months to run at Barnsley so it depends on security for the player and these types of things.
Pressley was asked if he had received any enquiries about leading goal scorer Leon Clarke or highly rated defender Cyrus Christie. He replied, “None as yet. I would imagine we’ll get them but the truth is I really don’t want to sell; I want to add to our squad. We’re paper thin as it is and if we’re serious about doing anything we can’t afford to lose anybody.”
