Coventry City U18's boss Greg Rioch was delighted with the Sky Blues 2-0 win over Aston Villa U18's on Saturday.
City took their time to get into the game but came strong in the second half to win with a goal from Courtney Richards and an own goal.
Speaking to the CT, Rioch said:“We are delighted with the result and it’s funny because it’s like the saying goes, when you’re at the top end the luck does tend to go in your favour because if I have to say, if there was a game this season when we probably didn’t deserve to win overall it was that one.
“We were a little bit flat in the first half when the Prozone stats showed we had 46 per cent possession to Villa’s 54 but they managed to turn that round in their favour in the second.
“But right on the stroke of half-time Courtney Richards had an open goal beckoning and slipped over as he tried to re-adjust his positioning.
“We had got to the 44th minutes, having not played very well at all, and then we got a chance and the lad was wearing the wrong boots.
“He was wearing blades instead of studs and I was quite critical at half-time but it is a learning curve for these boys and they have to know that everything has to be spot on.
“So he put his studs on at half time and scored with his head, so we had a little chuckle with that, but it was nice for him to show us what he can do because he has done ever so well this year.”
