City took the lead through a 33rd minute Conor Chaplin penalty and substitute Jonson Clarke-Harris finished well for the second in the 62nd minute.
Speaking about the win, Mark Robins told the media: “I enjoyed it; thought it was a really professional performance.
“I wish everyone a Happy New Year and hope they enjoyed their celebrations while we were all tucked up in bed.
“I thought we took a little bit of time to settle down but they are a really awkward side to play against and they changed things slightly because in the previous games they have played against us they started Adebayo Akinfenwa.
“So it took a little bit of time to get to grips with them but once we had done that I thought we were really good.
“First half, I thought we were outstanding and then second half we managed to do a job on them and managed to get a second goal which gave us a bit of breathing space, because they do put you under pressure.
“The clean sheet was outstanding and the performance was really good – a really strong away performance which gives us a great three points and great start to the new year.
“The running power of Jonson Clarke-Harris when he went on helped massively.
“I thought Jordy Hiwula led the line pretty well prior to that and it was a difficult one for him.
“He made some good runs off the back of them in the first half and tired a bit in the second, but that was always going to happen with the three games in a short space of time.
“Conor Chaplin worked his usual angles and positions and worked really hard. He got himself a penalty which probably put some demons to bed in his own head, but I think it’s three points that are much needed and outstanding.
“It keeps the run going and has given us an away win which was important because we haven’t been brilliant away in the last month or two, so hopefully that can kick us on going into the game at Scunthorpe on Saturday.”
