Coventry City Manager Mark Robins is maintaining his belief in Dujon Sterling.
The loanee from Chelsea had a mare at Bristol Rovers and was criticised by some of the City support at the Memorial Stadium but was much better during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Sunderland and speaking about him, Robins told the Coventry Telegraph: “We have young players in the side who we have to bring on, not kill.
“I could have brought him off last week in the first five minutes but that kills him because everyone in the crowd is stood shouting and screaming for him to be withdrawn, which clearly can’t happen.
“So everyone needs to understand that young players make mistakes. If they are supported they come through it a lot quicker.
“We did a lot of work with him last week.
“He will have his ups and downs, there’s no doubt about it. He’s 18.
“So I wouldn’t have taken him out of the team. I kept him in and then obviously he had to move from right-back to left-back and I thought he was outstanding and deserves credit for it, while learning from what happened last week.
“He has to forget what happened last week because, clearly, that wasn’t good enough.
“But he showed his character to come through so well on Saturday.
We work with the young players so much.
“We worked with him mentally as well because we had to after last week when we were an anxious team for 15 or 20 minutes and that cost us the game.
“So I wouldn’t have taken him out because I believe in him and we see the qualities that he’s got.
“And what I don’t like is when people target somebody and have a go at somebody for the sake of it because they don’t think he’s quite what they were looking for, or is not Jack Grimmer."
