Coventry Sphinx became the latest team who have failed to end Rocester’s unbeaten away record this season when they were beaten 3-1 by Rocester at Sphinx Drive.
Watched by a good crowd, a young Sphinx side containing a number of players out of Sphinx’s youth team were lively early on but conceded a free kick in the 12th minute, some twenty five yards. Jack Langston took the kick and his deflected effort flew into the net for the opening goal.
The sides then had to work hard for their chances and a wonderful 19th minute cross by Ashley Jackson from the left was swept over by Rikki Cutting, followed by a McNally free kick being saved by Froggatt and a teasing White cross just missing the incoming Bannister.
Six minutes in to the second half, Sphinx boss Luke Hopkins was forced into a change when Ricky Hill was forced off and replaced by Craig Richey.
Sphinx won two corners. Rocester did the same but the visitors were able to make their flag kicks count when Joe Rogers steered in from the second in the 61st minute to put the Romans two goals up.
Five minutes later, Rocester scored a third when former West Brom youngster Chris Sterling beat the offside trap and fired into the roof of the net.
The Sphinx supporters looked bemused at each other but this young Sphinx side kept going and did give their fans something to cheer with four minutes left when subsititute Kyran Johal scored what proved to be a consolation as Sphinx, who are at home to Studley on Saturday, went down to defeat.
