Safe Standing Day This Sunday

Football fans from clubs throughout the country will be descending on Adams Park in High Wycombe next Sunday lunchtime to attend Wycombe Wanderers' televised home Football League Two fixture against Brentford.

Why?

Because Wycombe Wanderers - in response to requests from their own fans to publicly back a campaign calling on the Government to permit the introduction of safe standing areas at stadiums in the top two divisions in England and Wales - have declared the fixture a Fans United Safe Standing Day.

Wycombe Wanderers' board will be inviting the 145 MPs who have signed a House of Commons Early Day Motion in favour of a debate on the introduction of safe standing areas in the top tiers, as well as representatives of the other 91 professional football clubs, to attend the match at Adams Park, High Wycombe (K.O. 1.30pm) on Sunday, September 9, 2007.

Following a sustained campaign co-ordinated by the Football Supporters' Federation and fans' pressure group Stand Up, Sit Down, the return of terraces to the top two divisions of English football is finally being given serious consideration by the government.

Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport James Purnell is currently assessing the FSF's in-depth report "The case for Safe Standing at major football stadia in England and Wales - A 21st Century Solution" a dossier of evidence claiming to prove standing is as safe as all-seat stadiums.

A senior civil servant confirmed in writing to the FSF that: "We are currently considering this report and the Secretary of State will respond to you fully in due course."

FSF chairman Malcolm Clarke said: "It's great news the government is finally looking at the issues. I look forward to receiving a full response from James Purnell and we would then like a dialogue about the issues raised."

Stoke City fan Clarke, who recently became the first supporters' representative on the FA Council added: "It is vital the momentum of this campaign is maintained now - and I hope Wycombe are rewarded with a bumper gate on Fans United Safe Standing Day, because they deserve it. I also want to thank Thames Valley Police for the helpful and constructive approach the force has taken to this initiative which has helped ensure Fans United Safe Standing Day can go ahead."

Fans have been asked to wear their club colours to the game, which will be shown live on Sky TV. Brentford fans are requested to occupy the normal away fans' area at Adams Park. All other supporters are welcome to sit or stand wherever they wish.

Fans United Safe Standing Day is being backed by both Stand Up Sit Down (www.standupsitdown.co.uk) and the Football Supporters' Federation (www.fsf.org.uk).
