Following on from the success of the Football League Trust ‘Female Football Development’ programme, Sky Blues in the Community have seen a very strong start to a newly established central venue Girls Secondary Schools Football League.
The Female Football Development programme allows Sky Blues in the Community to work with 24 different groups each year including local clubs, universities, community groups and secondary schools. Each group receives 10 weeks of football-related activity targeting females aged 14-25.
The new league – which runs twice a month, has been developed as a result of Sky Blues in the Community delivering the Female Football Development project in 14 schools since September.
The new Girls Secondary Schools Football League provides competitive 7-a-side football for Under 13 and Under 15 female players. So far 240 young women have played in the competition from 15 different schools across Coventry and Warwickshire.
Sky Blues Women and Girl’s Development Officer Toni Wellings said “The central venue girls league has been a brilliant success so far.
“Initially the fixtures were taking place at Sidney Stringer Academy, but the popularity of the league and the increased number of schools and players taking part means that we have now had to extend it to two venues.
“The league provides a really good place for girls who don’t necessarily want to join a club, but do want to do a bit more than just play as part of PE or extra-curricular activity.”
