LOUGHBOROUGH STUDENTS 0-5 COVENTRY CITY LADIES BY TIM KALNS
The Sky Blue Ladies maintained their flying start to the season with a comfortable win at Loughborough University.
The Students never really recovered from going two goals down in the first four minutes. Kelly-Ann Willis opened the scoring with an exquisite curler beyond keeper Bruton into the top corner from 22 yards; then two minutes later Natalie Brace raced onto Lipman's ball behind the full back to finish with an unstoppable half volley into the roof of the net.
The rest of the half was rather stale by comparison as the two sides largely cancelled each other out, but the Students showed signs of attacking intent with Sarah Ronald showing good pace and strength to get in two strikes just off target and going narrowly wide with a header from a corner.
On the stroke of half-time though, City went 3-0 up when Tash Lynch deftly cushioned Willis's inswinging corner into the side of the net from close range.
The Sky Blues continued to push forward from the re-start, but were denied by a number of quality saves by the excellent Naomi Bruton in the Loughborough goal, but Bruton needed the woodwork to come to the rescue when Kelly-Ann Willis crashed a shot against the underside of the bar to bounce down onto the line, where Emma Lipman was unable to force the ball in as Coventry supporters looked for a Russian linesman to flag a goal.
'Lippo' was not to be denied for long, however. On 72 minutes substitute Jade Formaston beat two defenders to whip in a low cross from the bye-line that the inrushing Lipman turned into the roof of the net at full stretch.
Kerry Williamson was called upon to make an excellent double stop from the impressive Ronald as Loughborough sought a late consolation, but 4 minutes from time Mel Byrne capped a hard working performance by beating her marker and finishing with a powerful shot past Bruton from 15 yards.
The Ladies top the table on goal difference from Leicester City Women, their next opponents at Westwood Heath this Sunday the 16th. Kick off is at 14:00 and admission is free to all Sky Blue supporters.
