Bas Sambou has rejected the deal offered to him by Coventry City in hope of landing a move to a Premier League club but has he made the right choice, we look at a few pros and cons.
Everton, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion all had scouts spotted at the U18's game against Barnsley on Good Friday in which Sambou scored a hat-trick of penalties in a 5-4 win and if his agent has been contacted by any of these three clubs then it is not hard to see why Sambou feels that his future may be away from the Sky Blues in League One.
All three of these Premier League clubs have a good record when it comes to youngsters and all have some form of pathway in place for progression for the first team for those with enough talent and determination.
Going to one of these three clubs would see Sambou playing against some of the best youngsters in this country at U21 level and able to test whether he has what it takes.
If he doesn't then, by being released by a Premier League club, gives him a better chance of finding another club than someone who has been released by a League One or Two club.
Football is a short career and players should always be looking to play at the highest level they possibly can, so trying to get in to a top flight club, does seem a gamble worth taking.
If Everton, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion are not the three Premier League clubs, then the gamble looks one not worth taking.
Sambou would certainly struggle to get into the U21 teams of Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City and Chelsea for example and he would be a very small fish in a very big pond at one of the major PL clubs.
With limited opportunities to play and playing matches has to the main thing on any footballer's mind, taking a deal with Coventry City, who can only offer League One and U21 League 2 football but on a regular basis might be put him in a position where he can earn a big money to a Premier League club, when he is better equipped to handle it.
