The Sky Blues have 34 points from 22 matches and are two points behind fifth placed Norwich. City are seven points behind leaders QPR who lost 2-0 at Leeds who have now moved up to second, after Swansea lost 1-0 at Sheffield United.
Reading moved up to seventh with a 2-1 win at Derby, whilst Forest beat Palace 3-0 and Ipswich beat Leicester by the same score. Hull City beat Bristol City 2-0.
In the Premier League, former Coventry City Assistant Manager Steve Kean's first game as caretaker Blackburn Rovers manager ended in a 1-1 draw with West Ham.
Kevin Kyle scored for Hearts in a 1-1 draw with a penalty.
