Coventry Sphinx were beaten 3-1 at home by AFC Wulfrunians in their final night match of the season.

Luke Hopkins had Ashley Cain back from suspension but kept the winger on the bench and fielded most of the team that had played in Saturday's 2-2 draw with league leaders Tividale.

It was the visitors who took the lead on a cold night at Sphinx Drive when Carl O'Neill raced out of his goal and cleared. Bradley Lawley was first to the second ball and cooly lobbed it into the net from thirty yards.

In the 28th minute, the visitors went further in front. AFC Wulfrunians were awarded a free kick which the Sphinx players and supporters hotly contested and Bradley Lawley fired home a low free kick.

Nine minutes later and the players were forced off the pitch when there was a power cut affecting some of the houses by Sphinx Drive and the floodlights. After a delay of ten minutes, the players were back on the pitch and Sphinx were on the attack with Tipton pushing away a Wilks free kick.

Sphinx were much better in the second half and with Ashley Cain and Matty Fowler on, Sphinx started to threaten.

Ricky Hill who has a fine game for Sphinx put in some good crosses and in the 6st minute, a peach of a cross from Cain was headed home by Matty Fowler.

With both sides taking exception to the referee who was flashing cards for the merest thing in a game where there was not one bad tackle, Steve Palmer’s side won a 73rd minute corner. When the kick came over, Carl O’Neill missed the ball and Bradley Lawley was able to tap home and complete his hat-trick and send Sphinx, who travel to Kirby Muxloe on Saturday, to defeat.
