Coventry Sphinx are tonight six points clear at the top of the Midland Combination after beating Southam United 2-1 at Sphinx Drive.
Paul Charnley's side trailed to a 38th Jim Clacker penalty but levelled two minutes after the restart. Jerome Murdock was hauled down and Craig Martin netted for the resulting penalty. Both sides had chances but Sphinx pilled on the pressure and snatched the game with five minutes left, thanks to youngster Calum Woodward turning his marker inside the six yard box and drilling the ball into the bottom corner.

The win sees Sphinx whose ground has been accepted for promotion to the Midland Alliance six points ahead of Highgate United. They face three more local derbies in quick succession with Alveston at home on Saturday,the big Coventry derby at Coventry Copsewood on Monday (7.45pm kick off) and away to Massey Ferguson on Thursday.
