Coventry Sphinx were beaten 1-0 at home by Alvechurch in a Midland Alliance.

After their 2-0 victory at Coleshill Town on Tuesday, Sphinx were back in action with a home league game against Alvechurch.

Again, Sphinx were not the first to start and the visitors won a corner and had Scott Smith miss with a fifth minute header.

Five minutes later and Jazz Luckie broke but Sphinx keeper Carl O'Neill blocked with his legs.

Kyle Rhodes then sent a header from a free kick wide before Liam McNally and Matty Bannister went close with long range efforts.

Alvechurch won a 33rd minute corner and three minutes later, Sphinx went even closer with a corner.

However, the good work from Sphinx was undone, when with three minutes of the half remaining, Alvechurch took the lead. The Sphinx defence appealed for offside as the ball was played to Jazz Luckie who stroked home from three yards,

Everyone looked at the assistant but there was no flag and the goal was allowed to stand.

Ricky Cutting had chances either side of the break before Maher got down to push a 53rd minute Kyle Rhodes shot for a corner.

Another corner followed on the hour mark.followed for Sphinx who were having the better of their play.

One thing missing from their game was a bit of luck and this was highlighted in the 72nd minute when Cutting got through. Maher got down to push the ball across the face of the goal but with no-one following up, the chance went begging.

It was further demonstrated when Kyle Rhodes was denied what looked to the Sphinx support as a stonewall penalty with eight minutes left and with it not being Sphinx's night, it was no surprise that they went down to defeat.
