The Best Performance So Far - Mowbray

Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray described the performance in the 1-1 draw against Oldham Athletic last night as the best home performance since he took over.

Mowbray told the Coventry Telegraph's Mike Malyon: “That was by far our best performance since I’ve been here with the number of chances we created and the pressure we put on Oldham restricted them to only a few chances throughout the 90 minutes,” said the City boss.

“I also have to mention the fans, who provided the best atmosphere I’ve felt at the Ricoh and they made seven-and-a-half thousand sound like 27,000, so all credit to them. They almost sucked that ball into the net at the end, which is encouraging and exciting.

“If we can play like that and put teams under that sort of pressure and create as many opportunities then the times ahead hopefully look good. But there’s still lots to work on. We’ve got to work on our quality of balls into the box.

“But I told the lads at the end that I was pleased and proud of them the way they applied their energy and the way they forced the game to go for the goal we needed.

“We pinned them back and they couldn’t get out and ultimately we got the goal.

“The Oldham goal was very disappointing because we work on free kicks and it was ridiculous the way we let the lad go down the side and get the cross in, which was very frustrating. That free kick routine was mentioned to the lads and they did not concentrate enough, so it was a very bad goal to concede.

“What was pleasing was the desire and the way the team reacted and the energy they showed and the desire not to lose a football match.

“It was always a possibility that we could have gone on to win the match because the momentum towards the end was with us. “The overriding emotion is that I am disappointed to have only taken one point from a home game but pleased with the effort of my team and delighted with the support we had tonight - which was like an extra man for us.."
