Coventry City striker Marlon King is having to make a hugely difficult personal decision whether to agree to sign the new deal or to accept an offer, quite probably a much better one, from another club.
At 31 years of age King is coming to the end of his professional career and he needs to take care of his family and their future and so a highly lucrative offer from a wealthier club than Coventry City would appear to be an attractive one to the striker who has had much publicised personal issues to contend with.
However he has been moved by the welcome he has received from the Sky Blue faithful and is grateful to the club for offering him a way back into football since his release from prison last summer, he wants to stay at the club.
Being voted the club's player of the year by the fans could be the clincher that helps to persuade King to stay.
Coventry City manager Andy Thorn has spoken about his own efforts and those of chairman Ken Dulieu to persuade King to stay.
He said to the CT: "I have got a good feeling about Marlon who I am hoping is going to re-sign. The chairman is working really hard on it and talks are going really well, so we are doing everything we can to keep him at the club, as we are the others."
Thorn explained that King was overwhelmed to be voted the fans player of the year, saying: "He was taken aback by all the awards and the fans and all that sort of stuff and so I am a lot more positive about it now than I was at the end of the season, that's for sure."
"I have spoken to the chairman who is working his socks off on it. He has got the bit between his teeth and we are just keeping our fingers crossed now because he is a good player and someone we want round the club. The chairman is busting a gut, so it is good news."
