Coventry City manager Andy Thorn has told his players that there main aim in the coming season has to be promotion back to the Championship.
He has been telling his squad during their pre-season training that he wants them to get their new season off to a flyer from the start and with this in mind he has been working hard to get his players fit for the challenge ahead.
Speaking to the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner, Thorn said: “I’ve let them know that there’s only one thing that I want, regardless of who’s at the club or not, and that’s promotion. We have to be on the front foot and our target has to be promotion."
With the departure of Martin Cranie, who rejected a new deal with the club and the sale of Academy graduate Gael Bigirimana to Newcastle for a reported fee of £1 million plus add ons, Thorn has admitted he would like to add more players to his squad.
He continued: “I’d love to make a few more signings to go with the quality we have already got.
"That’s got to be our goal and we’ll go all out to get it because if we can get people signed then we will give ourselves a chance and I’m confident about that, but first and foremost we need to give ourselves a proper base fitness, which I didn’t think we had last year because of the restriction we had with numbers.”
The players have been back in training for a week and Thorn has been working them hard, but rewarded them with a weekend off. The week ended with the much dreaded bleep test. Academy graduate Callum Wilson was the last player to drop out. Their efforts pleased Thorn.
He said: "The boys are in good nick to be fair and I’m really pleased with them. They’ve had a good week and really gobbled the fitness work up and shown a really good attitude. So they look good.
“They had the weekend off to recover and rest and we’ll work them hard again this week.”
