Coventry City manager Andy Thorn said that he was pleased for Gary Deegan who came on as a substitute and scored to give the Sky Blues a 1-0 win over Bristol City yesterday.

Speaking to the CT, Thorn, who was nursing a toe injury over Christmas said: I’m pleased for Deegs because he was out for a long time and you can’t expect to get your form back straight away even when you’re fit which was very frustrating for him.

“I put him on because I thought we weren’t winning enough tackles in the first half, probably because the system we were playing, and although he picked up a card for that first challenge it gave the team and the crowd a real lift.

“He’s staked his claim for a start against Brighton because I certainly don’t have a squad that allows me to leave out-in-form players.

"Whoever’s playing well starts.

“We’ve all been through a lot in the past couple of months, the players and the staff, but we’ve stuck together.

“Results are what counts but we know how close we’ve been to getting them and now we’ve nailed the idea that we’ve forgotten how to win we must start turning more of those good performances into victories.

“The boys have got the bit between their teeth – now it’s time to kick on!”
