The midfielder was due to return to Coventry after Brighton's League Cup game tonight but City have agreed that Thornton can stay down on the South Coast until January.
City will not allow Thornton to play in Brighton's FA Cup tie on Saturday against Hartlepool as they don't want him to be cup tied.
