This was a busy night of Cup and League actions. Coventry City were not the only Championship side to succumb to lower division opposition. Sunderland were beaten 2-0 at Bury with Makems manager Niall Quinn announcing he was stepping down following the North East side's fifth consecutive defeat.
Burnley were beaten at home by Hartlepool,Crystal Palace lost at home to Notts County,Colchester lost at MK Dons,Ipswich lost on penalties at Peterborough United for whom Trevor Benjamin scored. Plymouth lost at home to Walsall and Julian Joachim scored the winner for Darlington who won 2-1 at Stoke City. Luton and Barnsley needed penalties to get through their ties.
Tuesday Round Up
Locally, Nuneaton Borough lost 1-0 at home to Leigh RMI in front of a crowd of 843. Bedworth United drew 2-2 at home to Stourbridge thanks to goals from Jamie Williams and Adam Kinder.
In the FA Cup, Racing Club Warwick booked their place in the first Qualifying Round with a 4-1 win in a replay over Ford Sports (Daventry). The side which has former Sky Blue Danny Thomas as a physio face Westfields in the next round.
A crowd of 657 saw Leamington and Stratford Town draw 0-0 in a Midland Alliance game at the New Windmill. Ben Mackey and Dave Pearson turned out for Leamington whilst forty year old ex-Crystal Palace striker Dennis Bailey who once scored a hat-trick at Old Trafford appeared for Stratford mid-way through the second half.
Coventry Sphinx remain top of the Midland Combination Premier Division with a fine 2-0 victory at Cadbury Athletic. Coventry Copsewood drew 1-1 at Coleshill Town,Southam United won 2-1 at Pershore but Alveston lost 3-2 at home to Pilkington XXX. In the First Division, Stockingford beat Heather Athletic 1-0.
