The winger who is on loan from the Premier League club and on a deal whereby the more he plays, the less City have to pay Bolton for his services, is expected to be out for several weeks.
Gary McSheffrey is expected to come in as his replacement and Aidy Boothroyd told the club website: "I have spoken to Owen Coyle and Danny is going to go back up there to have his operation.
"Hopefully we will have him back as soon as possible, I do not know how long it is going to take, it will depend on the surgery, but hopefully we will have him back in about a month."
