Coleman named six youngsters on the bench for the game at Doncaster on Tuesday night but did not make a substitution and told the CT: "We are trying to build a good young team but we had babies on the bench and it wasn't a night for sending them on.
"Nowadays, the Championship is played at breakneck pace and you need a lot of experience out there on the pitch.
"If we had been playing well and were a couple of goals up then I might have put one or two on but at Doncaster we had too many below par performances especially in the first half.
"We' ve been playing the first team all through pre-season and we haven't be able to rest them so we are thin on the ground.
"That is not an excuse, because we never started the game in the right manner, but the fact is that the season's ten days old and we have played four games. Sometimes that can take it out of you and we saw some tired performances out there."
