"At Watford, I sat down with the coaches at the start of the season and set a target of 84 points," said Boothroyd to the CT.
"We only got 81 in the end, but the interesting thing was that we worked out who we were likely to beat and draw against and it didn't work out that way at all.
"We ended up beating the teams who'd come down from the Premiership and and dropping points against teams in the lower reaches. The way it's evened out in the last five years means that teams at the bottom can beat teams at the top; it's all about who can get some consistency and who can get the decisive touches in the key moments on the day.
"We never take any game for granted because comfort zones are the enemy of the elite and we want to get into that elite echelon - we want to be a team that people fear rather than look forward to playing.
"There are a lot of improvements we need to make. We want more clean sheets, want to be more comfortable when the back players are on the ball, want to be more creative, score a lot more goals.
"We've seen flashes of all of those things but at the moment I'd say we're ok. I don't think we are a poor side. I don't think we are a particularly good side. I think we are a side that is steadily heading in the right direction but needs to get all those little things together everytime we step on the pitch."
