Popular defender Andy Whing hopes to establish himself once more in the City team next season. The Brummie, who received the Christy Heffernan Memorial Trophy last season for Young Player Of The Year failed to get a look-in under Peter Reid but kept his faith putting in some excellent performances at centre half for City Reserves.
Whing Ready To Take His Chance
After an operation for a hernia injury which saw him sidelined for five weeks, Whing has waited patiently for his chance. He played in the 1-1 draw at Plymouth before coming on as a substitute against Derby and seconds later, writing his name into the Sky Blue history books by scoring the last ever league goal at Highfield Road.
Talking to the CET,Whing said: From day one the manager has always said I have got a future here," said Whing, who went down in the Sky Blue history books on Saturday when he scored the last-ever goal at Highfield Road.
"He told me not to let my head drop if I am not in the team because he said I would get my chance and that it was only round the corner. To be fair, he gave me my chance against Plymouth and I don't think I let anyone down in that game.
"He has been very complimentary about me so I have just got to work hard and hopefully I will be first choice right-back next season. "My target has always been to be first choice, especially after last season when I played a lot of games and know I can play in this division."
