The Coventry City Former Players Association are delighted to confirm that Sky Blue star of the 1960s and 70s and true Coventry City Legend Willie Carr will be our special guest at the upcoming home game at the Ricoh against Peterborough United next Saturday 31st October 2015.
Though flame haired Willie was born in Glasgow in 1950 he allegedly gained England Youth honours before serving his football apprenticeship at Highfield Road. At CCFC he was honoured with four Scottish Under 23 Caps before graduating up to the award of six Full Caps later in the decade he spent with the Sky Blues between 1965 and 1975.
Turning professional in 1967 Willie became a pivotal attacking midfielder and forward for the Club clocking up two short of 300 first team appearances for the City and weighing in with 37 goals. However even more memorable than these was the one he created for fellow Association member Ernie Hunt to volley against Everton in October 1970 with a backheel two footed flick from a free kick – televised and immortalised as the ‘donkey kick’ – which, unfortunately, was soon made illegal.

Willie was transferred to Wolves in March 1975 and turned out over 280 times for them (26 goals) before a short stint with Millwall in 1982 and then dropping into non-league football with the likes of Worcester City (1983); Willenhall Town (1983); Stourbridge Town (1984); Bridgenorth; and Willenhall Town (1986) where he was player – manager. On hanging up his boots Willie worked in the aerospace industry later becoming an engineering company representative. He now lives in the Black Country.

Willie tries to come and see us as often as he can and regularly supports our ‘Legends Day’ and ‘Golf Day’ events. Willie particularly enjoys meeting former colleagues and fellow members from north of the border on such occasions (above) and was last here in June for Golf Day 2015 where he is shown with his team. Welcome Willie!
