CRYSTAL PALACE RESERVES 4-0 COVENTRY CITY RESERVES BY KEV MONKS
Coventry City Reserves got their season off to the worst possible start with a 4-0 defeat at Crystal Palace. On a warm night at Selhurst Park, manager Alan Cork fielded trialist Andrew Impey in the number two shirt. Paul Watson who impressed during pre-season whilst Graham Barrett and Vijay Sidhu led the attack in a now very youthful side.

Palace, who finished as runners-up last term, fielded a strong team boasting the likes of Julian Speroni, Danny Butterfield, Danny Granville, Tony Popovic and Tommy Black.

Liam Davis, Luke Webb and Azariah Ogarro caught the eye forcing four early corners before Palace took the lead when Tommy Black headed home a Tyrone Berry cross from close range in the 15th minute.

Kit Symons side doubled their tally four minutes later when keeper Richard Brush was rounded by Ryan Hall after Impey had lost the ball. Brush got a foot to the ball, it trickled towards the goal line. Brush again got a foot to it and Lewis Grabban teed it up

Paul Watson limped off in the 21st corner and it got worse for City when Black got his hat-trick with a back header that looped over the stranded Brush on the half hour mark.

City's defence was now in tatters as Tyrone Berry fired into an unguarded net after Andrew Impey had been dispossessed to make it 4-0 with twelve minutes of the first half left.

Andy Gooding replaced the injured Paul McCrink at the break. Apart from shots from Graham Barrett & Azariah Ogarro shots, the Eagles continued to dominate the game.

Skipper Rikki Bains grew in confidence and was marshalling the defence reasonably well with Ben Turner to ensure that the Sky Blues did not concede any more.

With ten minutes left, Andrew Impey who had done little to impress the twenty or so City supporters in the crowd was replaced at right back by Adam Layfield as City Reserves got the season off to a bad start.
