Coventry City are up to seventh after their best performance of the season brought their fifth victory at Portman Road in 35 attempts.
529 City supporters, many of whom didn't pay the extortionate £31 admission or £33.50 on the day to get in, had laughed at the Ipswich village idiot with a megaphone who patrols up and down outside the Cobbold Stand predicting back to back wins for Roy Keane's team, on their way into the ground on a sunny but cold day.
We saw a City team that had Gary McSheffrey in for the injured Danny Ward and Lukas Jutkiewicz up front.
Now, City might not have won at Portman Road since 1994 but the way they played in the first half you would never have known.
Attacking towards the end nearest the away section, the Sky Blues, whose support included a number from England's eastern counties along with London, the Home Counties, Derbyshire, Kent as well as Coventry & Warwickshire, had the Ipswich defence under pressure from the outset.
The Sky Blue Song was booming out as former City keeper Marton Fulop flapped at a Gunnarsson throw in the opening seconds.
Lukas Jutkiewicz worked hard all game but does need to start putting away his chances. The former Everton man had two good chances in the opening five minutes as the City support informed the Ipswich fans to our left, who were clearly having some sort of leisure experience rather than being at a live sporting event in which audience participation is permitted, that all their tractors were made in Coventry and the fact that we have heard more noise in a library.
Ipswich had a couple of corners which were easily dealt with as Clingan ran the midfield along with Aron Gunnarsson whilst full backs Keogh and Cranie were able to get forward with ease.
In the 17th minute, in another City attack of purpose and desire, Jutkiewicz won a corner which Clingan took. Gunnarsson sent a header back across the goal and there was CLIVE PLATT to head into the net from close range before racing over to celebrate with the City supporters who were going mental in the away end lower and upper tiers.
With the Ipswich defence all over the place, City had a good shout for a penalty in the 23rd minute with a handball and another in the 32nd minute when Carlos Edwards handled.
The opening thirty minutes of football from City had been superb and on one of those days that makes following Coventry City worthy of all the hassle we endure, it was almost 2-0 when Jutkiewicz from twelve yards thumped the underside of the bar. The ball bounced down but did not go over the line before it was cleared.
At half-time, Roy Keane brought on talented youngster Conor Wickham and it was six and a half minutes before the Sky Blues were able to get the ball into the Ipswich half and even then they lost the ball.
Keiren Westwood like everyone of his team-mates was in good form and he got a good touch from a 52nd minute Scotland shot to concede a corner.
In the 55th minute, the City fans had plenty more to sing about when Jutkiewicz went down in the area. Referee Mr Shoebridge pointed to the spot and LUKAS JUTKIEWICZ easily beat Fulop to score.
We were still celebrating when Ipswich went and pulled one back two minutes later thanks to JASON SCOTLAND blasting in from twelve yards unchallenged due to the City defence not being switched back on after the goal.
Mr Shoebridge may have upset the home fans with the penalty decision but he incurred the wrath of the City support when he decided that an attempted head-butt on McSheffrey in retaliation and three fouls by Jake Livermore in less than twenty seconds, were not cautionable offences.
City continued to give Ipswich as good as they got with Richard Wood hitting the post from a 76th minute Clingan free kick before Martin Cranie saved City with a tackle when it was one against three.
With Carl Baker on for the excellent Aron Gunnarsson, a cracking Westwood save kept out a Scotland volley.
"Sacked In The Morning" chanted the City supporters at Roy Keane as another Irishman Michael Doyle was given a rare outing.
In stoppage time, Fulop came up for a corner but City had the win in the bag and it was back up the A14 with three points much to the annoyance of some very sore losers.
