Coventry City beat Wycombe Wanderers in an entertaining affair at the Ricoh Arena on Friday night.

Twas the Friday before Christmas and all was quiet especially around the Ricoh Arena as we arrived for Coventry City's League 2 game against Wycombe Wanderers.

The game moved to a Friday so Wasps could have their big Christmas game, came at the end of a week which saw defeats for City U23's and U18's, the loan signing of Josh Barrett from Reading and still no comment from City's CEO on where the Sky Blues will be playing next season depute him saying in a radio interview that he would have news before Christmas.

Today was also Mark Robins 48th birthday and he named a side which was unchanged from the one which beat Cheltenham last Saturday

City against a Wycombe team in a red kit, were straight on the attack and had a shot blocked with less than a minute gone.

Wycombe started with Akinfenwa up front and The Best was soon involved pushing his weight around and making the nuisance of himself that those who have seen him play before were expecting.

A blatant handball was spotted by everyone else apart from the match officals and gave the visitors an 11th minute corner that was so bad, Lee Burge caught it with ease before being fouled by Nathan Tyson who was booked.

In the 13th minute, City took the lead when Michael Doyle got the ball on the left and hit the ball from fully thirty yards into the net. Whether he meant it or not, matters little as all it meant was that the Sky Blues were ahead.

City were now going for it with a shot and a 19th minute corner leading to another which was curled onto the cross bar by Jordan Shipley.

A flick header by McNulty went across the goal and good work by Bayliss led to Chris Stokes firing wide.

Just before the half hour mark, Jordan Shipley sent a free kick just wide of Scott Brown's right hand post.

Wycombe countered with a free kick and then a corner.

Tom Bayliss got booked for something or other by a referee who gave Wycombe a corner in the 36th minute bemusing Max Biamou and some of the City support who were close to the action.

Then in the 40th minute, it was two when Marc McNulty got on the left and sent a lovely shot into the bottom corner of the net.

Peter Vincenti was fouled and got his studs caught in the turf and stayed down. A stretcher was brought down as five minutes of stoppage time were announced. But it was not needed and Vincenti hobbled away holding his right leg.

Devon Kelly-Evans was immediately sent on as the visitors won a corner before Sam Sanders, who spent the whole game trying to referee it, shot at Burge.

Wycombe pulled a goal back in the fourth minute of stoppage time when Dan Scarr scored with a lovely left footed shot from the edge of the area.

Nine minutes into stoppage time were eventually played before the half ended.

The second half started with Akinfenwa getting booked for trying to get a penalty and not being too happy about his yellow card.

His side did get a penalty from a Kelly-Evans foul in the 48th minute and Joe Jacobson took it and easily beat Burge to level the game.

An horrendous tackle on Bayliss saw Broomfield booked and in the 53rd minute, Scarr was booked for a foul on Max Biamou which gave City a penalty.

Marc McNulty took it and this time. He absolutely thumped it high into the net to put the Sky Blues 3-2 back in front in a game where poor refereeing was not dealing with the amount of petty fouls.

Wycombe in a game where the number of tickets sold was 7,234 had a corner on the hour mark

As a "Sisu Out" chant rang out, Stokes and Shipley won a 65th minute corner that fell for Jack Grimmer to get in a shot which was cleared off the line.

Stokes, who has been told to get forward more often, won a corner as did the visitors with twenty minutes to go.

Stokes won another corner before Shipley was elbowed and went down, something else not spotted by the referee who booked Shipley after McNulty cut in and had his effort saved by Brown In a

Shipley made way for Duckens Nazon for the last six minutes plus stoppage time.

Marc McNulty got through and went down under a challenge and was booked instead of getting a penalty on a mild night weatherwise.

Six minutes were added on and in that time, Wycombe had the ball cleared off the line, City sent on Tom Davies for Biamou, the visitors fired over at the end where their fans were and Nazon had a shot saved as City took the win.
