Coventry City went out of the Johnstones Paint Trophy Second Round with a penalties defeat at Leyton Orient
An easy journey down to East London for our second of three visits to Brisbane Road this season saw us arrive in time for a few pints before getting into the North Stand where there was a good turn out of 489 City fans with a good number based in London and the south.
In their sky blue kit, City, with Jordan Willis in for Cyrus Christie, attacked the North Stand end where the noisy City fans were.
Russell Slade's side had an early shot but before Leon Clarke sent a third minute free kick in to the wall of red shirts and as the City fans demanded to know where Steven Pressley's waistcoat was, Lasimant fired at Joe Murphy.
In the 19th minute, City got a free kick right on the D after a trip by Cuthbert which only resulted in a caution. But again, Moussa could not get his kick past the defensive wall.
Some of Orient's tackling was cynical and the City fans fumed when Moussa was hacked down by Vincelot, who was given a mere ticking off by Mr Robinson.
In the 29th minute, Orient, who produced a poster as a programme which they sold for £1.50, won the first of two corners and another ten minutes later as a steward came round offering cups of tea to some of the City fans sat on the front row.
Coventry had an early corner cleared as the second half started and Odubajo fired wide from a flag kick at the other end before a 50th minute corner for the Sky Blues came to nothing against an Orient side who were quick to close down any City players on the ball.
Two more corners for City followed but in the 55th minute, Odubjao got in a shot inside the area, which Murphy saved with his legs.
This allowed Coventry to counter, winning two corners whilst Odubajo fired over at the other end prompting a chant of "He'd Have Saved It Anyway" which brought a big grin to the face of the City keeper
Both sides made a change in the 65th minute with Arron Phillips coming on for Jordan Willis who had been solid alongside Jordan Clarke, Adam Webster and Blair Adams.
Phillips made a great tackle, as backed by plenty of encouragement from the City fans, the Sky Blues started to look more positive.
Fleck and Leon Clarke had chances as Billy Daniels came on for Adam Barton who had worked well in the centre of midfield.
In the 79th minute, Murphy made a great save from Mooney. City went up the other end and won a corner before promptly losing possession a handful of yards away from the corner flag.
That summed up the ninety minutes and it was no surprise that the game went to penalties, especially when Joe Murphy made a great save two minutes from time.
Leon Clarke stepped up first and scored as did Mooney. Franck Moussa went next but Jones was able to save, so Orient’s number two Omorusi stepped up and scored. Jordan Clarke was next for City and scored as did Sawyer. The fourth penalty was left to John Fleck to take. Needing to score, the Scot fired to Jones’ left and past the post. Joe Murphy needed to pull off a save to keep City in it but Lloyd James scored and City were out of the Johnstones Paint Trophy.
